about

From Nancy’s 2021 song cycle Tunnellers, commissioned by the British Tunnelling Society. In the digging of the Dartford Tunnel in the 1970s, the intense hyperbaric pressure (“the wind”), asbestos exposure and other strains put upon the underground workers made it a dangerous and ambitious project. With special thanks to Alex and Gary Vaughan and Tommy Gallagher for their compelling accounts of the hardship and camaraderie of miners’ lives.
